A statement smuggled out of prison through an Islamist lawyer, signed by 10 so-called historic leaders of the underground organizations Jihad and Al-Gama’a Al-Islamiya, is the latest in a series of the jailed leaders’ appeals for an end to anti-government attacks.
Sheikh Omar Abdel Rahman, who is currently in a US jail, has called for the end of all militant activities in Egypt carried out by Islamic groups and to completely disassociate themselves from the Saudi terrorist Usama Bin Laden. Other extremists leader, however, disagree.
Montasser El-Zayat, generally acknowledged as lawyer and spokesman of the radical Gama’at al-Islamiya, explains in an interview the dynamics within the extremist groups. He asks for a dialogue with these groups.
