Controversy has ensued since the announcement of proposed legislation that addresses the rights of non-Muslims in Egypt. Most significantly, amendments taking up the issue of the right of divorce, marriage, and adoption are provoking most disputes. The amendments are part of a law that has been installed in Parliament since 1979, which both President Sīsī and the Coptic Church are now demanding be brought into law.
