An Islamic preacher, Dr. Muḥammad ʿAlī, spoke to the news website Masrāwī about khulʿ in Islamic law, clarified its legitimacy, and identified the differences between divorce and khulʿ. He explained that whilst divorce is initiated by the husband, khulʿ is initiated by the wife when she feels that no other alternative is available to her but to leave her marriage. Moreover, in the event of khulʿ, the wife must repay the dowry to the husband. Dr. ʿAlī elaborated on the various different situations related to the waiting period for women (ʿidda), and stated that recent statements that had been attributed to the Grand Imām of al-Azhar, Shaykh Dr. Aḥmad al-Ṭayyīb, were false.
