Journalist Ahmad Zakī ‘Usmān reports on diverse opinions on what have triggered the ongoing protests in the governorate Qena - Ranging from regional political marginalization to an NDP supported counter-revolution. The most widely held view, however, claims that protesters are motivated by their common goal to replace the newly appointed Coptic governor with a Muslim one. Such views point out the sectarian nature of current demonstrations in Qena. Similar connotations underlie claims that demonstrations were organized by salafīs and the Muslim Brotherhood. Related to that, the article reports on Copts who fear a breakout of sectarian violence directed against them.
