Political/Religious Involvement
cAbd al-Raḥīm wrote many books on Islamic movements. One of his books is entitled, ‘Al-Ikhwān al-Muslimūn – Fatāwá fī al-Aqbāt wa-al-Dimuqrāṭīyah wa-al-Mar’ah wa-al-Fann’ (The Muslim Brotherhood – Fatwás on Copts, Democracy, Women and Art).(1) In this book, he tries to show the how the Muslim Brotherhood claims of defending national unity, respecting the Copts and defending women’s rights are fictitious. He discussed a number of fatwás that were printed in al-Dacwah (The Call), the former mouthpiece of the Muslim Brotherhood, and according to him, they reflect the group’s convictions and represent their driving force. (2)

cAbd al-Raḥīm cAlī also authored the biography of Jamāl al-Bannā, brother of the founder of the Muslim Brotherhood Ḥasan al-Bannā, and focused on his work for labor organizations and the revival of Islam. He believes that however close Jamāl al-Bannā got to the Muslim Brotherhood, he still did not integrate in their group. According to him, al-Bannā tried to establish a new Islamic strategy that is appropriate for the 21st Century. (3)

In al-Ahālī newspaper, he wrote about al-Jamācah al-Islāmīyah (the Islamic group) and its call for releasing Shaykh cUmar cAbd al-Raḥmān, the group’s leader, from U.S. authorities. He also mentioned that the group officially disassociated itself from the ‘World Islamic Front for Jihād against Jews and Crusaders,’ and declared that attacking Copts was unacceptable in Islam. (4)

In al-Qāhirah (Cairo) newspaper, he interviewed Dr. Muhammad Salīm al-cAwwā, a prominent Islamic intellectual, on a number of issues about Islam and Muslims, and their relationship with the West. (5) In his book entitled, ‘Al-Mukhātarah fī Safqat al-Ḥukūmah wa Jamācāt al-cUnf,’ (The risk in the (Egyptian) government’s deal with violent groups), he tackled a number of questions such as; “Is there a historical dimension to the activities of armed groups or of religious fanatics? Has the government had dealings with these groups in order to put a stop to acts of terrorism?” cAbd al-Raḥīm reviews the initiatives of political formations with religious orientations that have used violence in recent times. He looks in detail at, what he calls, the phase of confrontation between the government and violent groups from 1972 to the 1990’s. Furthermore, he looks at these groups’ ‘doctrines of violence’ since the 1990’s, and studies a number of documents belonging to them. (6)
