AWR Cairo, February 14, 2013

The board of CAWU is meeting on February 21 and is currently considering new members of our NGO. Due to regulations governing Egyptian NGOs, membership is only open to Egyptians and foreign nationals who have an Egyptian residence permit. New member applicants need to fill out a CAWU application form and submit this along with a resume. For a copy of the application form click here. New applications with resume must be received before February 19 for the CAWU board to review applications.  If accepted, new members need to pay a 50 LE sign-up fee plus 120 LE annual membership fee.

Background of CAWU

All too often, we live in our own small worlds, mixing primarily with people who share our nationality, culture, faith and political convictions. The Center for Arab-West Understanding (CAWU) seeks to break such patterns and encourages people of diverse backgrounds to get to know each other, discover what makes them similar and learn to respect and value our human diversity.

CAWU has years of experience in intercultural dialogue and is proud of its intern program which allows students to come to Egypt from all over the world, work with CAWU and  learn about different cultures. Over the last few years, CAWU has been fortunate to host interns from the Netherlands, Germany, Britain, America, the Czech Republic, France, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Korea, China and, of course, Egypt.

During their time with CAWU, interns have the opportunity to:

-Make use of the electronic database of Arab-West Report to write research papers
-Meet Egyptians from all political and religious backgrounds
-Write articles for the Arab-West Report
-Write papers for the Arab-West Report and academic publications

CAWU introduces interns to professors, politicians and leaders who can assist them in their research and offers guidance in academic writing in English.

Our world has become culturally polarized. CAWU attempts to break down cultural barriers. To do this, we need members who are open-minded and pro-dialogue.  The world has become too small for small-minded people and we need you to foster a global community.

CAWU wants its members to be well-informed, able speak and write about people of other cultures, religions and backgrounds with mutual respect.  CAWU encourages people to refrain from polemics, exaggerations and distortions of “others who are different”. We are explicitly non-partisan. In our work, we are non-preferential of any particular political or religious point of view, preferring dialogue over confrontation.

Our work is supported by international dignitaries such as former Dutch Prime Minister, Andreas van Agt and HRH Prince Hassan of Jordan, who called us “a vector for change.”
