Cairo’s China Day – Gaining an Insight into Egypt’s Chinese community

Maurice Gajan is an intern with unusual qualities. He is German, studied Chinese and interns with the Center for Arab-West Understanding in Egypt (CAWU).

Chinese Egyptian relations are growing. This was expressed in a China Day on September 18, organized by former  CAWU board member Mary Lai.

Maurice and I went to China Day whereby Maurice’s Chinese enabled him to meet with many different Chinese. Maurice and I were interviewed by Sammar Sheashaa of Egyptian TV Channel One. This will be broadcasted this Wednesday at 15.30. I told Sammar that it is my wish to see also other countries strengthening their ties with Egypt. Egypt goes through a very difficult period of much needed economic reforms. Egypt also needs tourism which will help millions of Egyptians to make a living.

It is tragic what happened to the Mexican tourists (see my article here) but this should not stop tourists from coming to Egypt. As I told Samma Sheashaa, I believe 95% of Egypt is safe but tourists should avoid trouble areas such as northern Sinai and the border with Libya.

Maurice Gajan wrote a very nice article on the growing Chinese community in Cairo in which he concluded “Cairo’s China Day was an ideal event for anyone interested in gaining an insight into the relatively closed, yet vibrant and diverse Chinese community of Egypt.” His article helps a wider audience to understand a community that only few non-Chinese are aware off.
