This is an amazing achievement during the covid-19 pandemic. This is in stark contrast to, for example, The Netherlands where the government decided to kill all cultural events during Christmas and new year due to fear for the omicron variation of covid-19. Yes, we need to be cautious but not to the extent that life is no longer possible.
In December 2020 we had performances planned in both the St. Joseph Catholic Church and the St. John the Baptist Anglican Church. The performance in St. Joseph Church had to be cancelled because some people in church had been infected. This year the church believes it is safe to perform.
Friends of CAWU are welcome to join. Of course, mouth caps are needed and so is social distancing.
The Centre made great success in promoting academic success. The end of unit 2 assessments were completed on time with minimum disruption to learning as rehearsals did not eat into teaching time. Teachers will complete the evaluations of these assessments before students return to school on January 10 when these will be discussed with individual students.
Our links with AUC are developing. Our basketball group is meeting on Saturday afternoons at the Maadi Community School. This is supported by Dr. Brooke Comer of AUC, AUC students and Mr Martin. AUC students are leading a discussion of the US film "Selma" regarding peaceful non-violent civil rights protests in 1960s Georgia. This activity is coordinated by Laila el-Banna and Dr Brooke Comer. The Centre has also introduced a Public Speaking and Debate programme as part of its efforts to improve the speaking and listening skills of students. This is led by Laila el-Banna. The continuation of INSET training in Assessment for Learning is leading to a much more constructive approach to teaching and learning. Student attitudes to their lessons are very positive. There is a consistent atmosphere of enthusiasm and earnest endeavour in all classes.
The preparation for Cambridge Accreditation is on-going and will focus next term on necessary documentation, curriculum planning and standards.
