It is hard to estimate the number of Coptic Christians living abroad since Western countries do not register migrants and citizens by religion. Yet in the discussion about the total number of Copts and the effect of migration on the church in Egypt, one needs to be able to make an estimate. The article of al-Misr al-Youm, June 13, 2011, on Egyptian expats is therefore interesting. Al-Misr al-Youm reports that the World Bank estimates that in 2010, there were 3.7 million Egyptians, or about 4.5 percent of the population, living abroad, though other estimates range from one to 12 million. The World Bank ranks Egypt eleventh in the world for its number of emigrants and fourteenth in terms of remittances received through official channels. No doubt the ranking could well be higher if non-official channels would be included but…how is it possible to estimate those?
