The Azhar and Dār al-Iftā’ will not stipulate a specific form of takbīr (the exclamation ‘Allahu Akbar’), according to puresunnah during ‘Īd al-Fitr, and in a fatwá stated that the form of takbīr used by Egyptians for a long time, as opposed to that used by the Companions of the Prophet, was correct and in accordance with the sharī‘ah. The fatwá also declared that whoever said this form of the takbīr was bid‘ (religious innovation or heresy) was closer to bid‘ himself, and that while the performance of the Īd prayer (Salāat al-‘Īd) in a mosque was acceptable, it was better to perform it in the open air, as the Prophet Muhammad had done (Wā’il Fāyiz, al-Watan, Jul. 27, p. 2).
