As every year with the beginning of Ramaḍān, the same rumor is spreading on social media: many Facebook posts speculate that the "insult to fasting"— eating in public during the day—is to be sanctioned by up to 3 months of prison, according to the penal code. These posts usually spread rapidly and feed confusion and worry among many foreigners. Legal analysis shows that no explicit provision in the Tunisian penal code stipulates prison sanctions for the simple fact of not fasting or eating in public during Ramaḍān.
