Relations between the Presidency and the Church in Egypt: infatuation and retaliation

All were surprised when President ‘Abd al-Fattāh al-Sīsī visited a Cathedral in celebration of Christmas, dazzling the crowd and setting a new precedent from that of his predecessors. With his visit, al-Sīsī became the first President to ever attend a Christmas celebration at St. Mark’s Church. al-Sīsī hoped to demonstrate through his visit that he is a different type of President for the Copts and that Egypt is passing through a new era of social relations.
