Dr. Aḥmad al-Ṭayyib, Grand Imam of al-Azhar, said in his Ramadan’s TV program that women have their own large share of gains to come with regards to their position and rights. He added, that one of these gains is the issue of “women’s travel”. It is known that women’s travel, according to most jurists, has historically been allowed only with the accompaniment of a husband or a guardian [muḥarram]. However, in light of changes in the travel system in our modern era, the risks associated have changed, and travel is no longer taking days and nights. It is religiously allowed for a woman to travel, such as for ḥajj, on her own without a guardian, as long as her safety is guaranteed. Even since the first era of Islam, a woman could carry out ḥajj as long as she had a trustworthy companion with her, as to prevent her from being exposed to any dangers.
