The article (written by a Christian intellectual) speaks about the integration of Copts in the Egyptian society. Too many empty words are used and too easily ’others’ are blamed. The author want to look for practical solutions which would be a contribution to Egypt’s development. We should look at the example of Jesus who taught us how human relations should be. He called for social justice and carrying individual responsibility. Integration can only be achieved if the relations between religions is not spoilt. And if a spoiled relation persists it will turn into conflict and confrontation. That is what happened to Egypt; except for the 1919 revolution there was no place for the Copts in the public life. After the 1952 the role of the Copts in the public life marginalized. At the same time the Copts had in pope Kyrillos a spiritual leader who gave them a sense of identity within the church. With president Sadat the position of the Copts worsened. Sadat gave the Islamists space in his fight with the Nasserists. In this conflict the Copts were used as the fuel for the fights. In this period the national unity was wrecked. Christian religious teachings were attacked and a fewer number of Copts were found in the civil service. Social segregation went on but was not studied. During Pope Shenouda the church was politicized. Meanwhile the media was islamized and Pope Shenouda clashed with Sadat which gave the Copts even more a sense of isolation. The author for equal citizenship and the integration of Copts in Egypt’s society which will make them contribute positively to Egyptian society to the benefit of Egypt.
