Bin Laden followed the most malicious methods of intelligence in brainwashing to convince the Arab Afghans that the killing of their national leaders, whom he declared unbelievers, and the terrorizing of their peaceful compatriots, was a kind of jihad. Bin Laden did real harm to the concept of jihad in Islam, when he transformed it from the defense of land, self-defense, defense of possessions and of honor, into violent activities. Darkness, poverty, hunger, disease and injustice are what Bin Laden wanted as examples of jihad in the Arab countries.
