In a lecture held at the UN headquarters in New York last January, General Secretary Kofi Anan criticized the harassment and the discrimination Muslims have been exposed to, especially after the September 11 events. Anan called for making up for the infringements upon the rights of Muslims throughout history, from the Crusades up till the contemporary Western military campaigns and the successive wars and occupations.


Dr. Mustafa Alawi, professor of political science and counsel to the president of Cairo University, believes that September 11 has resulted in a deep rift between the West and Islam and caused a fundamental change in the way Muslims are treated in America. .
