The living standards of priests in the past have been an average of the people, which accords well with the Christian value of humbleness. Today, the situation has completely changed. The reason for this change is probably the growing economic power of Copts living in Egypt and the expatriate Copts. This unprecedented wealth has caused a radical change in the relationship between clergy and laymen. Clergy are no longer in need of the financial assistance of laymen, which has reflected negatively on their relations.
