Various Sufi leaders called the burning and tearing of pages of the Koran a "cowardly act," and called for demonstrations outside every American embassy in the Muslim world. These Sufis demanded the expulsion of the United States Ambassador to Egypt and the boycott of the United States politically and economically. They warned that failure to do so would result in violent reactions and mass protests by Sufis all across Egypt.
