As reported in previous summaries [Salafists' destruction of shrines, or Salafists burn shrines amid Azhar criticism] Sūfīs and salafīs have recently clashed over Sūfīs' veneration of shrines of religious figures – a practice that salafīs regard as a form of anti-Islamic polytheism.
In reaction to such clashes and resulting attacks of salafīs on Sūfī shrines, Sūfīs have staged marches throughout the city on Thursday April 14, distributing leaflets that declared salafīs as "enemies of Islam."
In addition, Sūfīs have called for seminars, explaining their beliefs and practices.
Even though Shaykh 'Abd al-Hādī al-Qasabī, chairman of the Supreme Council of Sūfīsm, has told Sūfī shaykhs to stay away from politics, Shaykh Tāriq al-Rifā'ī (of the Rifā’īyah order) announced to soon form a party that would have Muslim and Coptic members to promote religious tolerance.
