On Tuesday April 19, 2011, seventeen civil rights and other political organizations called on the Supreme Council of Armed Forces (SCAF) to constrain the influence of salafī groups. They further argued that the SCAF’s  lenience hitherto has allowed salafīs to turn recent protests e.g. against Qena’s newly appointed Coptic governor into a sectarian conflict that posed a threat to Egypt’s national unity.
