Throughout Egypt`s governorates, salafīsts have gained in strength since the revolution. While liberals fear salafīsts as Muslim fundamentalists, the latter are keen on improving their image, accusing the media of continously damaging it. Accordingly, salafī preacher ‘Abd al-‘Azīm pointed out the group’s refusal to use violence in cases in which Egyptians, including Copts, should oppose them. He also emphasized salafīst’s appreciation of scientific progress and development. In addition, influential salafīsts assert that members of the ruling supreme council of the armed forces have shook hands with them, thanking them for having helped them to protect churches during the mayhem of the revolution.

‘Abd al-‘Azīm expressed his hope that salafīsts will gain parliamentary seats during the upcoming elections.
