Concerned by the recent anti-democratic statements made by some Salafī preachers and the strong Islamic political forces which could tarnish Egypt's successful transition to a democracy, 27 human rights organizations called for the creation of a Constitutional Council on Saturday.
In an effort to establish a body that could protect the constitution and the secular features of a democracy, the band of NGOs created the Basic Constitutional Provisions document which highlights a Constitutional Council led by the president of the Supreme Judicial Council.
The body is to include chairs of the high courts while it explicitly leaves out any special role for the current ruling Supreme Council of Armed Forces. As the SCAF has previously stated that it will only hand over power to civilians, the group of NGOs argued that there can then be no justification for including them in the protective body.
