Al-Yawm al-Sābi‘ runs a report on page 20, in which it claims to have had access to the dossier of the Samallūt train shootings, including the texts of letters exchanged between psychiatrists and police medical authorities.

These revealed that the accused, ‘Āmir ‘Āshūr, had first been examined by a police medical council on April 16, 2006. The council recommended that he be assigned to a desk job and not be allowed to carry a weapon.

According to the report, the council had sent the result of ‘Āshūr’s examination to the brigadier who headed the Hurghada Port Police, where ‘Abd al-Zahir was then serving. The diagnosis was "psychological disturbance."

While in Hurghada, the accused pulled a weapon on his superior officer, the dossier says, but the officer decided not to take official procedures against the man because of the "ten-year friendship" between them, instead only suspending him.
