Two Friday sermons on July 22 in al-Tahrīr square and al-Fatah mosque in Ramsīs revealed a possible confrontation between protesters and salafists.

While Shaykh Mazhar Shāhīn, the imām of the 'Umar Makram mosque in Tahrīr, also known as the Revolution Orator, warned the salafists against what he called a Friday of confrontation next week, Dr. 'Abd Allāh Darwīsh, the preacher of al-Fatah mosque in Ramsīs square, severely criticized the seculars and advocates of a civil state and asked them to leave Egypt.

"Sow that seed of secularism outside Egypt. Ever since we were young we have always been taught that we're an Islamic and a religious state," Darwīsh said in his sermon.

For his part, Shāhīn appealed to the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF), to take revolutionary decisions to bring former officials involved in corruption and killing of protesters to trial.
