Dr.  'Alī Jum'ah, muftī of the republic, said in an interview with al-Akhbār, that Egypt is a religious country and Egyptians chose to involve religion in the public issues. He notes that this should not be a reason of concern for Egyptians or the outside world because this has to do with the fact that Egypt's history had always been connected to Islam, which respects pluralism and is tolerant.

He insists that whether or not Egypt becomes an Islamic State has to do with the identity of the country, however, with assuring the rights for citizens in front of the law regardless of their religion.
