After the attack on the Israeli Embassy in Cairo on September 9, 2011, Prime Minister 'Isām Sharaf and his Cabinet handed their resignation to the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF) while the SCAF rejected the resignation.

The PM offered his resignation, admitting his negligence after Egyptian youth [as mentioned by al-Wafd] demolished the walls of the Embassy and broke into the Embassy, attempting to break into the Ministry of Interior Affairs, Giza Security Department as well as a number of police stations in Alexandria.
