Al-Azhar al-Sharīf condemns the terrorist attack targeting a gathering of Jewish Australian civilians near Bondi Beach in Sydney, which resulted in the death and injury of several victims. Al-Azhar reaffirms its unwavering stance on the sanctity of human life and the prohibition of attacks on civilians, regardless of their gender, religion, or nationality—a principle firmly rooted in the teachings of the Holy Qurʾān and the purified Prophetic Sunna, both of which categorically forbid aggression against human beings.
Almighty God says:
“Whoever kills a person—not in retaliation for a person or for causing corruption on earth—it is as if he has killed all of humanity. And whoever saves a life, it is as if he has saved all of humanity.”
(Qurʾān 5:32)
It is also reported that the Prophet Muḥammad, peace be upon him, once stood in respect for a passing funeral procession. When he was informed that it was the funeral of a Jewish man, he asked, “Is it not a human soul?”
While condemning this terrorist attack, Al-Azhar al-Sharīf also commends the heroic actions of the young Muslim man, Aḥmad al-Aḥmad, who risked his life without hesitation to try to disarm one of the attackers, sustaining two gunshot wounds in the process. Al-Azhar emphasizes that this noble act reflects the true spirit of Islam, which calls for peace, compassion, and protection of life, contrary to the false and misleading portrayals spread by some.
