In this op-ed, the author analyzes two important facets of the United States’ assassination of Iranian General Qasem Soleimani in Baghdad.  First, he looks at the figure of Soleimani as not only a skilled, interpersonal general but also the power he had within the Iranian regime and his future legacy within the regime.  Second, he wonders whether or not Trump’s decision to do this is reflective of a broader strategy or is merely Trump acting on his random, unpredictable nature.  The author then ends the article presenting thoughts about how the other countries in the region would be affected by an American-Iranian confrontation.
