This article provides an overview of the views of Rev. Dr. Andrea Zakī, Coptic Evangelical (Presbyterian) pastor and head of the Protestant Churches of Egypt, based on Arab media reporting as selected and summarized throughout the years by Arab-West Report/Dialogue Across Borders in response to claims of Coptic Solidarity in Christian Newswire with the title “Egyptian Evangelical Leader Reverend Zakī [has been] Confirmed as 'Agent' of al-Sīsī Government in the US.”
The article states that Rev. Andrea Zakī’s aim was to persuade members of the House of Representatives and State Department officials of ʿAbd al-Fattāḥ al-Sīsī 's credentials when it comes to defending religious freedom. This is evidence that Rev. Andrea Zakī is pro- al-Sīsī but not that he is an agent of the government of Egypt. Coptic Solidarity writes about Rev. Zakī providing “a far more positive narrative than is warranted,” with negative consequences for Egyptian Copts requesting asylum in the USA.
Coptic Solidarity’s alleged confirmation as an ‘agent’ seems to be based primarily on the fact that Rev. Andrea Zakī has expressed favorable views of the present Egyptian government. The fact that Rev. Zakī provides a more optimistic view of al-Sīsī and the present Egyptian government does not make him an agent or a lobbyist for the government. Church leaders in any country who want to be effective in their ministry need to find ways to negotiate and cooperate with government officials. His views are also not exceptional for many Egyptian church leaders and are fully in line with views he has held long before he met with US officials and politicians on a recent trip.
Some articles in this overview were selected prior to July 3, 2013, the day General ʿAbd al-Fattāḥ al-Sīsī removed then President Muḥammad Mursī from power after months of massive demonstrations against him. These articles show already the direction of Rev. Andrea Zakī’s thoughts. After July 3, 2013, all articles in Arab-West Report/Dialogue Across Borders on Rev. Dr. Andrea Zakī are presented. These show Rev. Dr. Andrea Zakī as an Egyptian nationalist, an opponent of Islamists coming to power. These also show Rev. Dr. Andrea Zakī has been presenting a more positive view of Egypt in the USA in line with his convictions. His position on female pastors shows that he is not a religious conservative leader. This, however, does not show a so-called confirmation of Rev. Zakī “as 'Agent' of al-Sīsī Government in the US.”
