The recent passage of a new law covering the establishment, management and funding of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in Egypt has been widely criticized by private groups already working in fields of social service, human rights and related areas of human concern. And rightly so. The very essence of democracy is free, legal opposition to the party in power. In Egypt, the law is increasingly being used to stifle any such opposition.
