The "Copts' Right to Divorce" society has expressed its optimism that a civil law on personal affairs for Copts will be passed, given the appointment of Jamāl As‘ad to the People's Assembly.

A prominent figure in the society who asked not to be identified said that As‘ad is known for his opposition to extremism and stubbornness. He said the goal in the coming period would be to emphasize that the Church is not the party to decide whether or not adultery had been committed.

The source added that "Copts' Right to Divorce" would go to court seeking a ruling on the non- constitutionality of the cancellation by the church of List 38, which deals with personal affairs. The prominent figure said that a conference would be held to reveal statistics on the numbers of those subjected to injustice by the Clerical Council.

Coptic intellectual and secular Coptic leader Kamāl Zākhir revealed that the secularists would hold a conference soon to discuss the memorandum submitted to the Ministry of Justice regarding the Unified Law on Personal Affairs. He also called for a speedy completion of a unified law on the building of houses of worship, so as to avoid sectarian incidents.
