On the evening of March 5, 2011, youth finished demolishing the church of the Two Martyrs, St. Mina and St. George after the previous torching incident.

In the mounting tensions leading up to the incident two people had been shot dead and three injured in the fight between the father of a Muslim girl and her cousins that wanted to kill her.

It is worth mentioning that the Security apparatus helped in building this church, and Muslim youth demolished it under armed protection. Some Muslim families in the town hosted Copts inside their houses to protect them from extremists.
