During the run-off elections for the workers seat of Heliopolis, a hot debate followed a statement attributed to the Church supporting ‘Amr Hamzāwī, who won the professional seat in the first round, and Hishām Sulaymān who is engaged in the run-off for the workers seat of Heliopolis. A number of prominent figures of the area considered what they described as the intervention of the church to be a religious institution's violation of the law.

Khālid Hasan, the Freedom and Justice Party's candidate for the workers seat of Heliopolis, argued that any side should be free to choose and nominate their candidate as long as religious institutions do not become a party to the electoral contest. However, Hisham Sulaymān stressed that Christian support for a Muslim candidate was honorable rather than a shame.
