The year 2012 witnessed a number of fatwás released by the Salafī preacher, ‘Abd al-Mun’im al-Shahāt. Insisting on the authenticity of his fatwá, he claims that according to Islamic Sunnah, the birth date of Jesus Christ is not in winter season, thus, harshly attacking Muslims who extend their congratulations in the "faulty" season. These fatwás had caused discomfort and resentment among Copts.

Another controversial fatwá focusing on Christianity was on the very name of Jesus being altered by [Saint] Paul.
