The purpose of this study is to present the most accurate data on the statistics of Christians in Egypt. The data were collected by the Egyptian Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS) 1986 census, the last year that the CAPMAS included the number of Christians for the smallest administrative units and computed these in totals for each of the 25 governorates. The analysis of statistics in this report is unique since the author had access to the data of the smallest administrative units, which greatly increases the trustworthiness of the totals presented. In publications one finds a wide variation on the percentage of Christians in Egypt, varying from 5.5% to 20%. The data collected suggest that in 1986 Egypt’s Christians made up between 6% and 7% of Egypt’s total population. The data showed that Urban Governorates and Upper Egypt Governorates have the highest percentage of Christians compared to Lower Egypt and Border Governorates. Asyut, Minya, Sohag, and Cairo were found to have the biggest Christian representation compared to all other governorates. Within governorates, Christians tend to live in urban rather than rural areas. The results of this study serve as a valuable addition to the literature and as a resource for future research.
