On December 20, 2020, Yūsuf al-Qaraḍāwī posted a tweet, blaming a lack of thinking on Muslims’ part for their current circumstances.  He quoted French Philosopher René Descartes’s saying “I think; therefore, I am,” but added that he fears that it will be said of Muslims: “You are not because you do not think.”

The next day, he posted a tweet mocking opponents of political Islam and accusing them of being pro-West, saying that on the day “the wind blows in Islam’s direction,” these pro-Western forces will be seen renouncing the West, embracing Islam, and filling newspapers with praises of it.

Of course, the two tweets mentioned above reflect a fundamental contradiction in the state of intellectual unrest that political Islam suffers from.  The contradiction is clear in al-Qaraḍāwī’s recognition of the absence of Islamic reason due to an abandonment of thinking while at the same time saying that “the wind will blow in Islam’s direction.”  That is, it will go back to being a pioneer and culturally dominant like was the case during the Middle Ages!
