On February 1st, Elizabeth Kendal, an international religious liberty analyst and advocate, published an article titled, “Egypt: The Gross Insecurity of the Dhimmī,” for Assist News Service (ANS), an online publication based out of California. Her goal in the article is to advocate for the subjugated “Dhimmīs,” or the Jews and Christians in an Islamic state who are submissive to the “Islamic order”. To support her argument, Kendal cites instances of crimes against Christians in Egypt, forced Islamisation, and other human rights violations towards Egyptian Christians. Arab-West Report supports writing for advocacy, however we also believe in providing sound evidentiary support in our work and in the work that we review. With this in mind, Prof. Dr. Bernhard Reitsma, who teaches “Church in the Context of Islam” at the Free University in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, asked us to review Kendal’s article to determine the strength of her argument by investigating the sources used and the statements she had made.
