Father Samuel on the Terrorist Attack in ʿIzbat al-ʾAqbāṭ

Background:

The interview concerns a terrorist attack on a village in Asyūṭ called ʿIzbat al-ʾAqbāṭ on 24 February 1996. Father Samuel describes the incident in the interview as well as the funeral that honored the victims of the attack.

The questions were asked in English but there was a translator for the Coptic Orthodox priest. So, all of the answers were in Arabic.

Enhancing Tourism in Luxor after the 1997 Massacre

Background:

The head of the City Council  of Luxor organized a press conference to talk about the situation in Luxor. In November 1997, 62 people including 58 foreigners were killed in a famous tourist attraction called al Dayr-al-Baḥrī which affected tourism in Luxor greatly. Questions were asked to the governor of Luxor about the steps taken to enhance tourism in the area.

Azhar scholar Dr. Bāyūmī’s view on Jewish-Muslim-Christian Relations

Background:

The recording included questions regarding how Muslims should treat Jews and Christians. Dr. ʿAbd al-Muʿṭī Bayūmī,  member of the Islamic Research Academy in Egypt and a professor at Al Azhar University responded to the questions.

Experiences of AUC Students

Background:

A group of students at the American University in Cairo (AUC) with different cultural backgrounds and nationalities were interviewed by Cornelis Hulsman to understand more about their experiences at the university. This part was conducted in English.

Reclamation of the Western Desert: Dr. Fārūq al-Baz’s NASA Press Conference

Background:

Dr. Farūq al-Baz (brother of Usāma al-Bāz, political advisor to President Mubārak) is  the Director of the Center for Remote Sensing and Professor at the Department of Archaeology and Electrical & Computer Engineering. He is also an Associated Faculty member at the Department of Earth and Environment, Boston University, Boston, MA, U.S.A. In 1997, the Center for Remote Sensing was selected by NASA as a “Center of Excellence in Remote Sensing.”

Interview with Azhar Shaykh Muḥammad Sayyid Ṭanṭāwī about suicide bombers, Naṣr Ḥāmīd Abū Zayd and freedom of belief

Background:

An interview with Shaykh Muḥammad Sayyid Ṭanṭāwī tackling how Islam responds to some controversial issues such as terrorism, freedom of belief and Muslims living in non-Muslim countries. The questions are asked in English then translated into Arabic. The responses of Shaykh Ṭanṭāwī are in Arabic.

Metropolitan Bīshūy on dialogue between the varying Christian denominations

Background:

Metropolitan Bīshūy is known to be quite the controversial and outspoken figure in regards to other Christian denominations besides the Coptic Orthodox Church. In 2007, the metropolitan had reportedly made a statement in regards to the Protestant and Roman Catholic Christians in Egypt, arguing they will not be saved by the Lord Jesus Christ. Despite of this disclosure, the metropolitan continuously stresses that he is active in dialogue between the Coptic Orthodox Church and churches of other denominations.
